The Long Road Back

Thursday 6th Aug

In September 2023, I underwent bilateral hip resurfacing following injuries sustained during my service in the Australian Army. I was 29 years old, and I was told that returning to long-distance running was highly unlikely. Combined with a concurrent spinal injury—a bilateral L5 pars fracture and lumbar spondylolisthesis—the road back seemed all but impossible.

Three years later, on 11 October, I will stand on the start line of the Perth Marathon. For me, simply making it back to the start line of a marathon is victory.

However, this marathon is about far more than personal redemption. It is an opportunity to give back and express my gratitude for the extraordinary support I have received throughout my recovery.

The Australian Army gave me the eight best years of my life—a lifetime of friendships, experiences and memories that I will carry with me forever. One of the most common themes in conversations with my peers, both serving and ex-serving, is the challenge of transitioning to civilian life. For those carrying significant physical injuries, that transition becomes exponentially more difficult.

Soldier On is one of Australia's leading organisations supporting veterans and their families as they navigate life after military service. If, by running this marathon, I can help raise awareness or funds for that mission, then every hour of rehabilitation, every painful training run, and every step towards the finish line will have been worthwhile.

If you are in a position to donate, no matter the amount, I would be incredibly grateful. If you are unable to donate, simply sharing this page or helping spread the word would mean just as much. Every contribution, regardless of its size, helps ensure veterans and their families receive the support they deserve.
