I'm riding in honour of two veterans in particular. The first is Warrant Officer Class One John King, my wife Julia's Dad. John served in North Africa (Tobruk) and New Guinea during WWII and he returned to Australia with permanent psychological and physical injuries (TPI). These days we know that his emotional struggles were due to PTSD. John passed away when Julia was only 15 years old which was devastating for Julia and her mother.
The second veteran is a fellow officer with whom I was honoured to serve. Equally tragically he was medically-discharged in 2019 suffering PTSD following his deployment to Afghanistan. I was shaken because he was the best of us: a young, fit and highly intelligent and respected officer destined for high office...an inspiration and yet even he was broken by his service.
